The American Peony Society's Annual Convention
for APS Members
May 13 – 17, 2015
GALT HOUSE HOTEL
140 N Fourth Street
Louisville, Kentucky 40202
Hosted by the Midwest Peony Society
We’re kicking off early this year to give APS members an opportunity to enjoy all things peony and more! The 2015 Convention will be your opportunity to enjoy a new venue. Stay at a luxurious waterfront hotel in the heart of Louisville, broaden your horizons with two days of tours, savor delicious meals, add to your peony collection at a spectacular auction, be entertained by a nationally-known banquet speaker, learn from seminars on a wide-range of topics, benefit from networking with peony growers and best of all, meet up with your old peony friends and make some new ones.
The following is an outline of the events we have arranged. More details, including seminar schedule will be published in the March issue of The Bulletin and on the website.
Wednesday, May 13
Award of Landscape Merit (ALM) Judges Training Workshop —
Part I. This will be an evening meeting at the hotel.
OPTIONAL TOUR — thursday, may 14
Board a chartered motorcoach at the hotel for guided tours of the Whitehall Mansion and Gardens. Available to the first 50 registrants. www.historicwhitehall.org — Fee: $15
Next stop, Yew Dell Botanical Gardens with picnic lunch. www.yewdellgardens.org — Fee: $25
Some attendees will choose to attend the ALM Judges Training Workshop — Part II, at Yew Dell Botanical Gardens after lunch, while others will return to the hotel. Transportation back to the hotel will also be available after the workshop.
Thursday evening, attend the APS Board of Directors Meeting, with a break for dinner, at the hotel. — Fee: $35
optional tour — Friday, May 15
W is for WOW! We will travel via chartered motorcoach to Lincliff where we will tour the gardens of Sue Grafton (yes, Sue Grafton, the famous crime novelist) and Steve Humphrey. After researching their garden’s famous landscape designs, they have spent years refurbishing the grounds of this 1912 estate. In addition to restoring original garden elements, the couple has added new features inspired by some of the most famous gardens in the world. Just don’t get lost in the eight-foot-high maze of blue point junipers or you will miss our next stop for “Fun Day at the Farm” at Huber’s Orchard and Winery, complete with fried chicken buffet. Next, we will travel to Floyds Knobs, Indiana to visit the garden of APS Director, Don Smith, and his wife, Kathy. Explore the 10-year-old acre-and-a-half collector’s garden with more than 500 peonies and unique garden sculptures. Then it will be time to return to the hotel for an evening on your own. — Fee: $40
“Exhibiting Peonies” seminar at the hotel in late afternoon.
All optional tours include round trip transportation
and only attendees riding the chartered motorcoaches
will be included in the tours and meals.
Saturday, May 16
Saturday morning’s schedule begins early with the preparation for the Exhibition. After the judging and awards are placed, the Exhibition will be open to the public. Educational opportunities will be provided by the afternoon seminars. In the evening there will be more time to socialize, followed by a buffet dinner, Annual General Membership Meeting and an unprecedented array of items up for auction. Allen Bush of Jelitto Perennial Seeds will be the speaker.
Sunday, May 17
The Exhibition continues with more seminars in the afternoon. And, of course, your volunteer time in assisting with clean-up is always appreciated.
