Arlene Thompson
Back to RegistrySeedling number 18-34. Parentage: ‘Belleville’ open pollinated. First bloomed 2018, first propagated 2020. Very late blooming DOUBLE flowers are pink, fading to a lighter shade at the petal margins. A narrow light-cream colored collar around the middle of the flower is sometimes visible. Flowers are 15.25 cm (6”) in diameter, upward facing, and average five per stem. Guard petals are notched. Highly fragrant. Reproductive structures are fully transformed to petalage. No fertility noted. Disk is obscure. Plants reach 86 cm (34”) at maturity, and carry narrow-pointed, green foliage. Foliage at the time of emergence is green. Growth habit is upright; mechanical support is unnecessary. Named to honor Arlene Thompson, a good friend of registrant, and lover of fragrant peonies. Arlene’s late husband, Wayne, worked for the Klehm Nursery as a young man, disbudding peonies – a practice Arlene still carries out on her own peonies, even at ninety-one years of age.
