Flower displays progressive stamen transformation as well as flower-in-flower traits. Three or four rows of rounded guard petals, 1¼-1½ inches (3-4 cm) in width, held cupped. Inner petals are smaller, notched, somewhat ruffled. Petals near the center may have edges shaded lavender, showing their carpelode origin. Pollen-bearing stamens interspersed among the petals, the filaments pink at the base fading to pale yellow at the tips. Generally 2 carpels, cream colored, sparsely hairy. Stigmas pink. Fertility not determined. Staminodal disc obscure. Fragrance. Early foliage emerges green. Upright growth habit, height 22 inches (56 cm), support not needed.
