Maiden Rock
Back to RegistrySeedling number NB-H34A. Parentage: ‘Pastelorama’ x ‘Pastelegance’. First bloomed 2009, first propagated 2011. Early-midseason blooming DOUBLE flowers are pink, 20.3+ cm (8”+) in diameter, upward facing, and average one per stem. Guard petals are rounded, ruffled, and are typically 7.6 cm (3”) in width. Fragrant. Carpels are four in number, smooth, and green in color. Stigmas are pink, and of normal anatomy. Stamens are between 1.25-2 cm (0.5-0.75”) in length, with filaments that are uniformly light-yellow in color. Fertile both ways. Disk is obscure. Leaflets are broad-blunt, and green in color. Foliage at the time of emergence is light red in color. Plants reach 81.25 cm (32”) at maturity. Growth habit is upright. Robust, and with extremely thick stems, mechanical support is unnecessary. The cultivar was known at Solaris Farms for a number of years as “Kim’s Sister”, in reference to its sibling relationship to the cultivar ‘Kim’, though also in reference to Kimberly Bremer’s sister Linda Gammel. “Maiden Rock” is a prominent bluff rising above Lake Pepin on the Mississippi River across from Kim and Linda’s childhood home. The name pays homage to the people and places intimately ingrained in their memories. Like the natural landmark it is named for, ‘Maiden Rock’ has large blooms held well into the air and appear to float above the foliage. With excellent plant and floral habits, the cultivar may, in time, give rise to new generations of herbaceous hybrids with exemplary habits. Won Certificate of Merit and Best Seedling at the 2024 APS Exhibition and Flower Show in Bloomington, Minnesota.
