Midseason blooming DOUBLE flowers are reddish-purple, 13 cm (5.12”) in diameter, upward facing, and average one per stem. Guard petals are frilled, and are typically 3.6 cm (1.4”) in width. Fragrance noted. Five smooth, light-green carpels carry red stigmas of normal anatomy. Stamens are between 1.25-2 cm (0.5-0.75”) in length. Some oblanceolate staminodes are present, and are reddish purple in color. Fertile both ways. Sheath is partial, and red in color. Plants reach about 70 cm (27.5”) at maturity, and carry broad-blunt, green foliage with purple margins. Foliage at the time of emergence is red. Growth habit is upright. Good resistance to cold and drought. The two words “nong yuan” not only represent the gorgeous flower, but also refer to the agriculture; the specific meaning of the name implies that the flowers are beautiful and fragrant.
