Early blooming SINGLE flowers are a strong purplish-red, 17.5 cm (6.89”) in diameter, upward facing, and average one per stem. Guard petals are flat, and are typically 8.5 cm (3.35”) in width. Dark red flares emanate from flower center and transcend approximately 18% of total petal length. Fragrance noted. Five moderately hairy, pale yellow-green carpels carry deep purplish-red stigmas of normal anatomy. Stamens are more than 2 cm (0.75”) in length. Filaments are yellowish-white transitioning to strong purplish-red at the tips. Easily fertile both ways. Sheath is complete, and a deep greenish-yellow color. Plants reach about 80 cm (31.5”) at maturity, and carry broad-blunt, green foliage. Growth habit is upright. Grafts easily, and stems are hardy and elegant in appearance; not easily damaged by wind, and winter damage has not been noted to date. Bright colors, beautiful flower patterns, and good seed production make this tree peony both ornamental and edible.
