If Wishes…

2021 Convention – “If Wishes Were Peonies”

Schedule of Online and Live Options

The American Peony Society is excited to present “alternative” options to enjoy peonies, in leiu of the normal “live” APS Convention.  Due to the multiple impacts of the Covid-19 Pandemic, APS understands the need for options which keep members safe and healthy, and provides for those who have restricted travel.  Public and Member participation options are available for enjoying peonies through a number of online options.   APS Members have the same options as the public, but are also able to attend Society meetings and seminars, enter photos in the show, visit a number of APS Member only tour gardens and participate in the Annual Spring Auction (online).  Additionally we’d like to invite anyone to become a “Sponsor” and become a Paeonia Hall of Fame member.

If you are not an APS member and would like to participate in “If Wishes Were Peonies” offerings, we invite you to become a member at: Purchase Memberships – it’s easy and there are many other benefits.

Micropropagation of Woody and Intersectional Peonies

  • Presenter:  Donald Smith
  • Bio:  HERE
  • Date & Time:  Sunday, May 2, 2021; 6:30 p.m. CDT
  • Program Description:  This seminar will discuss the various options for propagating the intersectional (i.e., semi-woody peonies) and tree peonies (i.e., woody peonies).  Each propagation method will be briefly summarized and the advantages and disadvantages will be discussed. The majority of the talk, however, will focus on the micro-propagation of the woody and semi-woody peonies, which is rapidly becoming the propagation method of choice for these two important peony groups. Because this method is relatively new and begins in a laboratory, the details and advantages of this method are not generally or widely understood by the typical gardener.  As a consequence, some outdated/misinformation persists within the peony community regarding this method and this, in turn, has led to a certain level of mistrust in the quality and authenticity of the plants produced by this method. This presentation is directed towards providing a fair, accurate and detailed up-to-date review of micropropagation as it applies to specific peony groups.

  • Program Description:  Peonies are very easy to grow because they require minimal attention, making them the perfect plant for a beginner gardener. Newer varieties offer strong stems that won’t flop over even when in full bloom, as well as outstanding foliage that adds beauty to your garden all summer. Join us as we cover the basics of growing these fragrant beauties, including the correct way to plant, strategies for growing, and a series of care tips. Bring your questions for the Q&A portion too!

Historically Overlooked Peonies of the Midwest

  • Presenter:  Harvey Buchite; Hidden Springs Flower Farm
  • Bio:  HERE
  • Date & Time:  Tuesday, June 1, 2021; 6:30 p.m. CDT
  • Program Description: This presentation will focus on overlooked and historically important midwestern peonies which have garnered greater attention as the whole peony world has come online. Many of these peonies are better known in overseas gardens than they are in the United States due to sales and collecting practices in the peony world, but should be considered excellent candidates for American gardens.

What's Wrong with my Peony? A Primer on Peony Diseases

  • Presenter:  Margery Daughtery, Senior Extension Associate, School of Integrative Plant Science Pathology and Plant-Microbe Biology Section, Cornell University
  • Date & Time:  Saturday, July 24, 2021; 10:00 a.m. CDT
  • Program Description: You asked for it and we are delivering – a program on peony diseases given by an expert in the field. Peonies can be infected by several fungal pathogens, viruses, bacteria and nematodes.  The most common and severe disease is botrytis blight which can be deadly. Peony blotch is another common but less severe fungal disease. The bacterial leaf spot is becoming increasingly problematic. And we’ve all seen powdery mildew.  Less common, thankfully, are viral diseases and foliar and root nematodes.   Learn how to identify problems, the best management practices to prevent or treat most diseases, and when you might just need to assign your plant to the trash bin.

Growing Peonies From Seed

  • Presenter:  Nate Bremer
  • Bio:  HERE
  • Date & Time:  Monday, July 26, 2021; 10:00 a.m. CDT
  • Program Description:  Peonies are easy to grow from seed, but a little background knowledge is helpful to understand their unique growing cycles.   This program will take an extensive look at growing peony seeds outdoors and briefly discuss indoor methods which can be used to get seeds started.  Collection of seeds, seed types, characteristics of seeds, timing and other important information for successful seed propagation will be covered as well.  Join Nate for some interesting visuals, perspectives and experiences.

APS Member Tours

Minnesota and Wisconsin

One of the highlights of an APS Convention are touring peony gardens!  Of course the “Live” Convention in Minnesota was cancelled, but a number of gardens which were scheduled to be toured or be available for pre/post convention touring would like to extend an invitation to APS members to visit.   Since these garden owners made preparations for the event for a number of years they would like to make them available to members able to travel to their location.  Dates and times are variable and APS asks Members who would like to attend these tours to signup through the website.  Additionally, APS asks visitors to these gardens to be respectful and use pandemic precautions to protect those who are vulnerable.  Additional Publicly available tours may be found HERE.

Auctions

Share a Peony in Support of APS

Auctria Auction Website…  No Auction available at this time.  Next Auction will be a live auction held at the Annual Convention in Michigan (2022).

Auctions are the main fund raising method for our non-profit Society and are much enjoyed by participating Members.   Auctions function as annual fund raisers, allow for distribution of often rare plant material and provide opportunities for Members to share their favorite peonies with others.  Auction funds support a myriad of programs, publications and website initiatives, which depend upon member generosity.   Many of our APS Commercial Members graciously donate material each year, however the Society encourages individual members to support our peony community as well – The American Peony Society.

Mary Muellner, APS Auction Chair, welcomes donations of any size for auctions and hopes you are able to help bring joy to a gardener and at the same time support APS.  Donations can be peony divisions, grafts, seeds, peony related items, books or activities – all are welcome.  Most donors submit plant items for fall shipping, but non-living items may be shipped to winners immediately.  Further information may be found HERE

To DONATE to this auction please use APS’ online submission form at:  SUBMIT AUCTION PLANTS  (you’ll need to login to the Member Portal).
