Peony Registry

Seedling number 15, held in the germplasm repository of the Horticulture and Plant Protection College, Yangzhou University. Parentage unknown. First year bloomed 2009; first propagated 2010. SINGLE. Flower size 6¼ inches (16 cm). Purplish-red flower (RHS 72A) having 2 rows of guard petals which are held loosely cupped. Has few sidebuds, many stems without. Three to 4 yellowish-green carpels, smooth, with purplish-red stigmas. Some stigmas feathered, forming tufts arising from within the stamen boss. Has pollen, and seeds. Has fragrance. Narrow pointed leaflets on upright stems reaching 41¼ inches (105 cm) in height. The name reflects the tufted center petals which are suggestive of butterflies resting on the flowers.
