Seedling Number: NB-SH91. Parentage: ‘Pluto’ x ‘KC Red’. First bloomed 2014, first propagated 2016. Early-midseason blooming SEMI-DOUBLE flowers deep-red. Maroon flares with blurred edges emanate from the flower center, and span approximately 20% of total petal length. Flowers are 14cm (5.5″) in diameter, outward facing, and average one per stem. Guard petals are rounded, ruffled, frilled, notched, and are typically 5cm (2″) in diameter. No fragrance noted. Flowers possess an average of four green, smooth carpels with red stigmas of normal anatomy. Stamens are between 1.5-2cm (0.5-0.75″) in length; filaments are uniformly light-red in color. Sheath is complete, and red in color. Plants reach about 122cm (48″) at maturity, and carry broadly-pointed, deep green foliage with hints of red and a waxy texture. Highly fertile pollen and excellent seed production. Plants tend to be strong, healthy growers with better-than-average stem hardiness in the cold Wisconsin climate. The dark flowers and foliage were evocative of a dark name; Hades, the Greek god of the dead and king of the underworld.
