Received December 08, 2021. No seedling number; received from Hermann Krupke as an open-pollinated seedling from a pale yellow quadruple hybrid of Saunders lineage, which was also raised from seed by Hermann. The latter is unregistered at this time. Propagated and evaluated under the garden name Krupke’s Pastel. First bloomed early 2000’s, first propagated 2004. Has had prior distribution under garden name. Midseason bloom. One flower per stem, 6-7 inches (15-18 cm) in size. SEMI-DOUBLE, occasionally DOUBLE when mature. Flower opens creamy pastel-yellow with prominent rose-pink flares located primarily on the large guard petals. Flares extend 30-50% of petals’ length, fading to creamy yellow towards the edges. Light fragrance. Average of 3 carpels, bright green, sparsely hairy. Stigmas pink with normal anatomy. Pollen-bearing stamens, filaments yellow. Fertile both ways, presumably tetraploid. Interesting reddish-green foliage on emergence with rather hairy stems and leaves. Upright growth to 32 inches (80 cm). Mechanical support not needed. Named with the German breeder Hermann Krupke’s new home Sweden in mind, where his famous peony nursery “GuldsmedsgĂ„rden” can still be found today. Hermann, who created some very fine herbaceous peonies, passed away in 2020.
