Toivo Kurmet
Back to RegistrySeedling Number: MP6-28. Parentage: ‘Akron’ open pollinated. First bloomed 2011, first propagated 2014. Midseason blooming JAPANESE flowers are reddish-pink (RHS N74A), 14cm (5.5″) in diameter, upward facing, and average one to two per stem. The flowering time has varied over the years, from early to late, so mid-season is merely an average. Bloom time is extended with the large number of lateral buds. Fragrance noted. Guard petals are rounded, and average 5-6cm (2-2.4″) in width. Flowers possess five sparsely hairy, green carpels (139C). Staminodes are oblanceolate in shape, reddish-purple in color (N66D) and yellow at margins (19A). No pollen, seed fertility noted. Plants reach 85cm (33.5″) at maturity, and carry finely-cut, green foliage. Growth habit is spreading, though mechanical support is unnecessary. Named for Toivo Kurmet, good friend of Registrant Sulev Savisaar, gardening enthusiast and peony collector. The cultivar took 3rd place at the 2019 Mädapea Peony Exhibition.
